Mattress Firmness Guide for South Africa: Plush, Medium or Firm?
Walk into any mattress showroom and you’ll hear the same words: plush, medium, firm. But what do they actually mean, how do South African brands use them, and, the question that matters, which one should you sleep on? This guide explains firmness properly, so you can shop with confidence.
Firmness is not the same as support
The single most useful thing to understand about mattresses is that firmness and support are different things.
Support is the mattress’s ability to keep your spine aligned. It comes from the core: the springs or high-density foam base. Firmness is how the surface feels. It comes from the comfort layers on top.
That means a plush mattress can be wonderfully supportive, and a firm mattress can be badly supportive. “Firmer is better for your back” is a myth left over from a generation ago. What your back needs is correct alignment; what your shoulders and hips need is enough surface give to avoid pressure points. Firmness is about matching the surface feel to your body and sleeping position.
The firmness levels South African brands use
Most SA manufacturers, including the Restonic, Genessi and Beyond Sleep ranges we stock, describe their mattresses on a four-step scale:
- Plush: a soft, cushioned surface you settle gently into. Pressure-relieving and cocooning.
- Medium: a balanced feel: noticeable cushioning, but you sleep more “on” the mattress than “in” it.
- Medium-firm: firm support with a modest comfort layer. The most widely tolerated feel, and the usual safe choice for couples.
- Firm: a solid, structured surface with minimal sink. Maximum stability.
Match firmness to how you sleep
Side sleepers → plush to medium
On your side, your shoulder and hip carry most of your weight on a small area. The surface needs enough give to let them sink in slightly, keeping your spine straight. Too firm, and your shoulder is pushed up, bending your spine and creating pressure points that make you toss.
Back sleepers → medium to medium-firm
On your back, weight is spread evenly, and the priority is filling the gap at your lower back while supporting your hips. Medium to medium-firm does this well for most people.
Stomach sleepers → medium-firm to firm
Stomach sleeping puts your hips at risk of sinking too deep, arching your lower back. A firmer surface keeps your midsection level.
Combination sleepers → medium or medium-firm
If you change positions through the night, pick the middle of the range so no position is badly served.
Body weight changes everything
Firmness labels assume an average-weight sleeper. The heavier you are, the deeper you sink, so a “medium” feels closer to plush for a heavier person and closer to firm for a lighter person. As a rule of thumb: under about 60 kg, consider one step softer than the guidance above; over about 100 kg, one step firmer: and look at ranges rated by weight per person, like several Beyond Sleep models, which state a maximum sleeper weight outright.
Sharing a bed with different preferences?
Two options work well. The pragmatic one: medium-firm, the feel most people can live with happily. The better one, if the size allows: a king mattress gives each of you nearly the width of a single bed, which softens the compromise considerably. See our bed sets in king if you’re upgrading size and mattress together.
How to test firmness in a showroom
Lie on the mattress in your normal sleeping position for at least five minutes, not a polite sit on the edge. Side sleepers: check whether your shoulder feels pinched. Back sleepers: slide a flat hand under your lower back; a large gap means too firm, no gap and sunken hips means too soft. Visit us at Northlands Deco Park, Randburg and take your time. That’s what the showroom is for.
Shortcut: let the finder do the work
If you’d rather not memorise any of this, answer four quick questions in our mattress finder, size, sleeping position, comfort preference and budget, and it will shortlist matching mattresses from our range. Narrowed it to two? Compare them side by side before deciding.
