How to Choose the Right Mattress for Better Sleep

A good mattress should keep your spine aligned while still feeling comfortable. The right choice depends on your sleeping position, body weight, and any pressure points you struggle with.

Start with support

Your mattress needs to do two things simultaneously: provide enough firmness to keep your spine properly aligned, and enough give to relieve pressure on contact points like shoulders, hips and knees. Getting that balance right is the foundation of a good night’s sleep.

Pick firmness by sleeping position

Side sleepers usually need a little more cushioning for shoulders and hips: a medium or plush feel tends to work best. Back sleepers often prefer a medium feel that supports the lower back without letting the hips sink too deep. Stomach sleepers typically need a firmer surface to prevent the hips from sinking too far forward and straining the spine.

If you share a bed with a partner who has different preferences, a medium-firm mattress is usually the best compromise. It suits most sleeping styles reasonably well.

Know the common materials

  • Foam: Great for pressure relief and motion isolation. Ideal for light sleepers or couples where one partner moves around at night.
  • Hybrid: Combines comfort foam layers with a pocket spring core. Offers a balance of cushioning and responsive support, often the most versatile option.
  • Innerspring: Traditionally bouncy with strong airflow. Good for hot sleepers and those who prefer a more responsive surface.

Check the practical details

Beyond feel and firmness, consider a few practical factors:

  • Heat: Do you sleep warm? Look for foam with airflow channels, natural latex layers, or breathable cover fabrics.
  • Edge support: Especially important if you sit on the edge of the bed to get up, or if you share a bed and want to use the full mattress width.
  • Motion transfer: Pocket spring and foam mattresses absorb movement better than traditional innerspring, an important consideration for couples.
  • Size: Make sure you’re buying the right size for your room and sleepers. See our South African bed size guide for exact dimensions.
  • Base compatibility: If you’re upgrading the whole set, make sure the mattress is matched to a supportive, compatible base.
